Music

Superstar

September 17, 2021 By professorfrenzy 2 Comments

I know The Carpenters aren’t exactly in my normal wheelhouse but every few months I get one of their songs stuck in my head and learning and recording it is the only way to stop it.

Superstar isn’t one that has been in the mind-loop before, but it is a pretty song. I didn’t realize it was first done by Delaney and Bonnie which is cool. However, as well as Clapton may have played it when he was with them, he has no chance next to Karen Carpenter’s voice.

Of course you don’t get Karen here, you are stuck with me. I ignored most of the Carpenter’s arrangement and accompanying music and did my own thing including a little bluesy lead which I think gives it a mellow mood. It was difficult doing the Chorus/Verse time shift without a drummer. I think I did the chorus a little too fast, but it is what it is. I hope you enjoy this version.

Mutant Jamboree

July 23, 2021 By professorfrenzy 2 Comments

Last weekend I went to Joe Bob Briggs’ Mutant Jamboree at the Mahoning Drive in in Pennsylvania. What a great time everyone had, heat and monsoons couldn’t mess with the good time.

Anyone that knows me knows a good time means a song is coming, and here it is. My tribute to a fantastic weekend.

Svengoolie Night Tonight

January 4, 2020 By professorfrenzy Leave a Comment

I got the idea that I could pull this off from Robin Stevens from Twitter. I didn’t have a podcast anymore that I was doing parody songs however.

But it is such a good song.

So, for some reason I sync’ed up Saturday Night’s Alright with Svengoolie Night Tonight. And I was off.

The weird thing is that end part is the weakest part of the song. Parts of that piece (Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday Saturday Night’s alright) are classic and you can’t really do a parody song without them. But I found what I could do with only a guitar and vocals underwhelming. Funny maybe, but musically weak. Needs drums. If you know anyone dot dot dot

I prefer the chorus and verse. I am happy with the lyrics, plenty of shoutouts to the Svengoolie experience and some of the movies that he plays. I couldn’t resist a reference to Ants! Also, I love Myrna Loy.

Thanks for listening and see you at Svengoolie.

Here Comes Bat Books

For anyone interested, do not play Here Comes the Sun the way I am playing it here. It isn’t the correct chords and is ill-advised. I play it this way because I like it not because it is good or right.

I played Here Comes the Sun at my senior year of HS’ Battle of the Bands. I was in a duo with my neighbor Ed. We played Our House, Here Comes the Sun, he played Yes’ Mood for a Day. We were a very low key band but pretty musical, though there were a few wildly unsuccessful experiments along with the successful ones.

I wanted to change the strings on the Strat before I recorded this. But I got hung up and didn’t get a chance to.

Enjoy.

This is a parody of the song The Weight by The Band. I used both the album and live version from The Last Waltz for the intro, also got some help from YouTube.

Batman and Robin Down By the School Yard

August 26, 2019 By professorfrenzy Leave a Comment

Bad bad bad. This was a song that was perfectly happy being a 70’s oddball. Little did I realize how much fun it is to play. The rhythm is wonderful. Had a little trouble with some of the lyrics but one day it all just fell into place. That funny “It was against the law” break: Em to Am is a weird digression. I left it in, but the rhyme is so repetitive I thought it would be tedius. Saved by Catwoman’s paw.
